Finding Our Voices members will participate in the DBSA (Depression, Bi-Polar Support Alliance) "Faces of Recovery" event. The event is on May 22, 2010, at the Pikes Peak East Library, 5550 N. Union, Colorado Springs, CO. You will learn how creative arts helped three speakers cope with mental illness. Finding Our Voices founder Joyce Aubrey will share her story and paintings through a presentation called "Aftershocks." Joyce chose this title because aftershocks are intense and unpredictable, as are the after-effects of sexual abuse. Karen Sucharski, performance poet who compiled poetry anthologies for the Finding Our Voices art show & sale, will share poems that helped her endure the loss of her daughter. Karen has published several poetry collections. Diana Alishous will share how creating quilts helped her express her challenges with bipolar. Diane has recorded her experience in her book Depression Visible: The Ragged Edge. The "Faces of Recovery" event will be from 1:00 to 4:30 PM. Learn how others are recovering from depression, PTSD, Bi-Polar, anxiety disorders, and other mental illness.
For 15 years, DBSA has been providing no cost support groups for individuals with mental illness in Colorado Springs. The support group for women who have experienced sexual assault and have a mental illness (depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc) meet on Wednesdays from 7:00 - 8:30 PM.
